About[]

Hinche is one of the Spaniards' most ancient settlements on the island. It was already substantial in 1504. Then the village became a town with 500 houses; it was just 120 in 1720. Today it is a village whose population has grown since 1822 through the establishment of estates founded on its territory by Western department citizens, Artibonite and North.

The Goâve Valley's location is very favorable to cattle breeding; this territory is very fertile due to the numerous rivers that water it, and particularly the Guayamunco on whose Hinche's edge is situated. Its woods of mahogany are transported by the Artibonite River to Grande-Saline.

The Las Guanas locality is a property owned by the heirs of Basquiat, located in Hinche. The area is characterized by an abundance of coal, particularly rich in bitumen, found in Savane-à-Pierre. The Canon River serves as the origin of the Guayamunco, which is the primary tributary of the Artibonite River at its confluence. In certain locations, the coal seam measures between 8 to 10 feet in thickness, as reported on September 10, 1860, by M. E. Nau to the Moniteur on September 22. This property spans a significant area between Hinche and Billigny, as well as between Lasguamas and St-Michel. The geological formations of this basin create the foundation for three stepped dikes that supply water to the Ravine aux Sables and its tributaries, enhancing the value of this basin, which is partially owned by the Basquiat estates, along with the surrounding properties. Additionally, the area is noted for its mahogany wood.

The Las Muerve locality, another rural estate belonging to the heirs Amilcar and Coriolan Basquiat, features mahogany wood.

The Ravine aux Sables flows in the savannas of Lasguamas. The land is collected towards this corner of water. It is a small Niagara in the shape of a trap. The coal material is made up of superposed beds of a very black and very bituminous lamellar coal.

The Rivière Nuntiane flows in the area too. The edges are steep. It is close to the outcrops of the Guayamuco coal basin.

• On January 22, 1924, the Lagonette plantation, also referred to as Las Ratonès, situated in Hinche, was reported by the Cadastral Commission to have had 843 parcels of land claimed in favor of the State.
