Vallières⭐ (23,526) Known as "the oldest city of the Upper Northeast", this rural mountain community is where Toussaint Louverture was imprisoned by his own chief, Jean-François, in 1793; this is where the Cacos found their refuge during the American occupation in 1915. Also called the "City of Freshness", it is located at the confluence of five mountain chains, resulting in a landscape of basins, waterfalls, green mountains. Reforestation has been a boon to the local economy, which is based on agriculture (coffee, sugar cane, cocoa, cotton, and food supplies), livestock, and trade. This city has two caves within its boundaries and is home to the historical monument of Fort Salnave. |
Carice (13,615) The settlement of this remote agricultural town is the result of a wave of migration caused by a massacre in 1937. The town's development has historically been dedicated to the coffee culture, thanks to climate of this area, appropriate for this crop, and an elevation 400 meters above sea level. The local economy is based on agriculture (mangoes, bananas, and coffee) and trade. |
