Trichet is a communal section in the Southern Department of Haiti. Designated as the third communal section of Saint-Jean-du-Sud, it is the location of Pointe l'Abacou, the southernmost point in Haiti.
About[]
Abacou is an alteration of the Indian word bocao, mouth.
The Abacou is for the Southern Department what l'Arcahaie for the Western Department, or what is le Borgne is for the Northern Department: an abundance storehouse, an important production center.
Its population is laborious and active.
Located on the seaside, its products find an easy outlet in all the cities of the southern coastline. The tip of l'Abacou juts into the sea; It is considered very difficult to navigate by ships coming up from the west.
History[]
Abacou was previously the seventh section of Port-Salut.
In 1803, the commander of the Port of Les Cayes, Kerpoisson, chose a spot beyond the Pointe de l'Abacou, between Les Cayes and Port-Salut, and drowned all the revolting natives who were falling into his hands.
