Route Nationale # 5 is a highway located in Northwestern Haiti. Route Nationale # 5 has a total length of 72 kilometers (44 miles).
Description[]
Its northern end is located at the beginning of Port-de-Paix, at the crossroads of the Route 151 towards Jean-Rabel with the entry road into the urban area of the city. The road, built in the 1920s-1930s, has not been properly maintained. The deterioration was widespread and has increased since 2008. However, since 2011, the replacement of the aprons by new bridges have been carried out, following their destruction in 2008 after the passage, in just a few weeks, of Tropical Storm Fay, followed by Hurricanes Gustave, Hanna and Ike. The new bridges are at the following kilometer points:
PK 24+775: Pont Mancel (on the Carrefour Joffre – Gros Morne section)
PK 32+850: Acul Bridge
PK 55+975 & PK 56+380: Land I and Land II bridges
PK 57+650: Pont des deux Garçons
PK 54+450: Bridge over the Nan Rosier
PK 62+275, PK 62+420 & PK 62+620: The 3 Moreau bridges.
Since 2015, construction work on the Saint Louis du Nord bridge, as well as the Anse-à-Foleur bridge are underway on the RD501. The road crosses localities of varying importance: Gros Morne, Canifice, Savane Carrée, Carrefour Tell, Bassin Bleu, Fond Papaye, and Chansolme.
Section 1: Gros-Morne - Bassin-Bleu
This section includes a large number of gardens and residences built along the road.
Section 2: Bassin-Bleu - Port-de-Paix
Irrigation canal at Tiboucan
This section, like the previous one, is already relatively wide and bordered by gardens and residences. Large irrigation networks run along or cross this section of the road. There is a higher density of habitats and activities than on the first section.
