Haiti Local

Route Departementale 61 (RD-61 or RD-601) is a 2.2-kilometer (1.4 mi) long regional road in the North Department of Haiti. Entirely located within the commune of Milot, it serves as a short but important connector between the historic town of Milot and the national road network at Barrière Batant, where it intersects with Route Nationale 3. The road follows the course of Route de Milot for its entire length.

Route Description[]

Route 61 begins in the center of Milot, a historically significant town best known as the seat of the Sans-Souci Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former royal residence of King Henri Christophe. The route operates as a one-way loop system through the town center before continuing northeast.

In the southbound direction, Route 61 starts from Route de Milot at a four-way intersection where the route splits into a one-way system, turns right, then makes the next left at Carrefour Mazè, and continues southwest through residential areas to the Trois Rivières bridge. In the northbound direction, the route begins at the Trois Rivières bridge, near the La Chaudière restaurant, heads southeast for a block before curving northeast to rejoin the main alignment at the split point, then continues along the main thoroughfare Route de Milot.

From this central area near the cemetery, the unified route heads northeast through a semi-urban landscape along Route de Milot. Along the way, it passes notable local landmarks including Hôpital de Sacré-Cœur, one of the largest and most important medical facilities in northern Haiti. The road then continues past scattered homes and rural paths as it skirts the edge of low hills and crosses small streams, including one near Jara Production.

The landscape becomes more open as the route approaches the village of Dubreuil, surrounded by agricultural land and modest foothills. Route 61 ends at its northern terminus at Barrière Batant, where it intersects with Route Nationale 3, one of Haiti’s major north-south arterial highways.
