Route Departementale 602 (RD-602) is a regional roadway located in the northeastern part of Haiti. Stretching from the mountainous commune of Mombin-Crochu in the Northeast Department to the urban center of Ouanaminthe, the route serves as a critical link between rural communities and one of the region's major border cities near the Dominican Republic. Along its course, RD-602 connects several small towns and rural areas, facilitating access to local services, agriculture, and trade corridors. The route also functions as a northeasterly extension of the centrally located RD-305.
History[]
The construction of the road from Ouanaminthe to Carice via Mont-Organisé in 1950 marked a turning point for northeastern Haiti, especially in terms of land use and environmental impact. Originally built to facilitate the transport of coffee and lumber, the road accelerated the deforestation process that had already begun in the 1940s.
The region had experienced significant demographic changes following the 1937 massacre of Haitians in the Dominican Republic, which triggered a wave of migration and led to the establishment of an agricultural colony in Mont-Organisé to accommodate displaced populations.
In the early 1960s, after a failed uprising against the Duvalier regime, many coffee plantations were looted, prompting farmers to abandon coffee production in favor of subsistence crops like beans, maize, yams, and bananas. This shift was driven not only by declining market prices but also by political repression and instability. Later, between 1977 and 1980, mining activity in the region further contributed to the loss of forest cover, compounding the ecological degradation already underway.
Route description[]
RD602 begins at a Y-shaped junction in the village of Bois de Laurence, where it splits from the northern terminus of Route 305. At this point, the main road forks—Route 602 continues to the northwest, while a secondary road veers off to the northeast, loosely following the Lociane River and serving remote mountain localities, including Sylvestre.
From Bois de Laurence, Route 602 heads generally northward, climbing through forested hills before entering the small commune of Carice. The road acts as a primary artery through Carice, supporting local traffic and market access. It continues in a northeasterly direction through varied terrain, reaching the town of Mont-Organisé. Here, the route runs through the town center, providing key access to administrative and community services before descending into the more open plains closer to the border.
As the route nears the city of Ouanaminthe, it passes through the rural sections of Gens de Nantes and Savane Longue, transitioning from hilly terrain into flatter agricultural zones. Upon reaching the outskirts of Ouanaminthe’s urban area, the road enters the residential neighborhood of D’Osmont. At this point, Route 602 curves gently to the right, merging into the town’s street grid. It then makes a sharp left onto a local road commonly referred to as Vers D’Osmont.
RD 602 continues along this corridor, running past Ouanaminthe Airport and serving as a key route for travelers heading into the city. The road intersects with Rue de Lumière, where it connects with spur route 602A. From there, Route 602 continues for approximately one more kilometer, terminating at a junction with Route Nationale 6 in downtown Ouanaminthe, a major hub for regional commerce and cross-border traffic.
