Route Departementale 402 (RD402) is a departmental road located in the Southeast Department of Haiti. It serves as an auxiliary route of the Route Nationale 4 (RN4), connecting the coastal city of Jacmel to the inland commune of Thiotte. This departmental road has a total length of 116.59 Km (72.5 miles).
RD 402 Urban section
Route description[]
Route 402 begins in downtown Jacmel at the intersection of Avenue de la Liberté (Route Nationale 4) and Av. Barranquilla. From this busy urban junction, Route 402 follows Avenue Barranquilla east through the urban area of Jacmel, characterized by densely packed houses, local markets, and small businesses lining the street. At Breman, the route officially becomes RD-402 as it continues toward the outskirts of Jacmel.
Approaching Carrefour Raymond, Route 402 enters the rural commune of Cayes-Jacmel. Here, the landscape shifts from the urban bustle to a more pastoral setting of small farms, scattered homes, and rolling hills. Local vendors and roadside stands are common, reflecting the agricultural economy of the area. The road remains narrow and winding as it navigates this hilly terrain.
RD 402 suburban section
Approximately 1.3 kilometers beyond the locality of Nan Man Four, Route 402 crosses into the commune of Marigot. The environment here becomes noticeably more mountainous and forested. The village center of Marigot presents a modest cluster of homes and public buildings, with the road crossing a small river at the town’s edge. After Marigot, Route 402 veers northward toward Seguin, intersecting with Route 108.
Shortly after Seguin, 402 enters the commune of Belle-Anse, with Seguin’s eastern boundary unofficially marking the start of Belle-Anse’s town limits. Within Belle-Anse, the road maintains a rural character, passing through agricultural fields and residential areas. About six kilometers into Belle-Anse, the route turns southward, descending toward the coastline. The sea becomes visible from the roadway at various points along this stretch, offering panoramic views of the Caribbean. Small fishing villages punctuate the coastline here, their modest harbors and wooden boats lining the shore.
By the time Route 402 reaches the community of Nan Malgré, near Calumette, it has descended back to sea level, completing a scenic traverse from coastal plains through mountainous heights and back down to the shore. The road passes through Belle-Anse’s center, where small shops, churches, and community centers line the street. Roughly five kilometers beyond the town center, the road enters the Lagon des Huîtres National Park, a protected coastal wetland area. Here, Route 402 leaves the coastal alignment and ventures inland, winding through lush vegetation and low hills. The park stretches along the route for approximately nine kilometers, offering scenic views but also presenting road sections that are less maintained and occasionally muddy during the rainy season.
RD-402 rural section
Exiting the national park, Route 402 reaches the village of Mapou, the main settlement of the Mapou communal section. Mapou is a small rural community marked by farming activity and modest dwellings. The route briefly reenters the national park approximately 900 meters later as it crosses into the municipality of Grand-Gosier. Within Grand-Gosier, the road continues for about five kilometers until reaching the Colline des Chênes district, an area characterized by steep hills and limited infrastructure. Road conditions here become rougher, with unpaved stretches, narrow lanes, and occasional erosion posing challenges to vehicular traffic.
About 4 kilometers after Colline des Chênes, Route 402 enters the commune of Thiotte. The road in Thiotte remains largely rural and mountainous, with winding curves and limited maintenance. Small farms and forested areas dominate the landscape. Continuing for roughly five kilometers through Thiotte, the route enters town center at from the southeast, then curves north onto Rue Macpella, which it follows to a fork in the road. Eastbound traffic continues to the right, leading to another split in front of the Place Publique de Thiotte. Here, Route 402 again bears right, reaching its terminus at Route 801, which continues south toward the Anse-à-Pitres border crossing.
A secondary alignment exists for traffic bound toward the Cul-de-Sac Plain. At the first fork—where Rue Macpella goes right—vehicles instead bear left onto a street that parallels 402 through the town center. This road passes shops and homes before curving north at the Frechè Esansyèl motel, intersecting with Rue Philoclès. Pavement begins just after this point, and the road passes the Thiotte police station before reaching a four-way intersection with Route 801. Continuing straight leads north on 801 toward Fonds-Parisien, and the Cul-de-Sac Plain, while turning right leads south toward Anse-à-Pitres, re-intersecting with the first alignment roughly 350 m down the road.
