Route Departementale 302

Route Departementale 302 (RD-302) is a 67-kilometer (42-mile) departmental road located in Haiti’s Centre Department. It begins in the city of Hinche, where it connects with Route Nationale 3, and extends eastward through the commune of Thomassique before reaching its terminus at the Haitian–Dominican Republic border. Along its course, the road crosses rivers such as the Rivière Samana and the Río Hondo, and it passes through a number of settlements including Los Palis, Rodéo, and Terre Blanche before arriving in Cerca-la-Source. With its largely rural setting, Route 302 serves as a vital transportation corridor, linking agricultural communities to regional markets and providing one of the department’s direct connections to the Dominican Republic.

Route description[]

Route begins in the city center of Hinche at Route Nationale 3. Leaving the urban bustle behind, the road crosses the Rivière Samana and enters the rural section of Aguahedionde, soon reaching the town of Los Palis. It winds through the center of Los Palis, with houses, small shops, and local traffic lining the way, before turning toward Thomassique.

Crossing the Rivière Rio Hondo, the road enters Thomassique’s town center, where it threads through the streets and neighborhoods before continuing east. Elevation gradually increases as the road moves out of Thomassique, with rolling hills and gentle climbs shaping the landscape.

As 302 leaves Thomassique, it passes through the Félipé and Rodéo neighborhoods. The road keeps left at a split, then continues through Terre Blanche, gradually climbing with alternating short descents. Road conditions vary, with paved stretches in town centers and rougher or gravel sections in rural areas.

At Morne Petit Paincroix, the route splits again: the right branch leads through Saltadère and Los Cacaos toward the Haitian–Dominican Republic border, mostly on unpaved and rugged terrain suitable for 4x4 vehicles. The left branch heads toward Cerca-la-Source’s center, partially paved but with rough stretches, including a shallow river crossing. Elevation climbs moderately here, interspersed with short downhill stretches through valleys.

From Cerca-la-Source, the road continues through rolling hills and farmland, passing landmarks like Garde Cachiman and Terre Canne, before reaching Lamielle, an inverted-y intersection near the end of the route. Here, Route 302 continues straight toward Tilory, while a secondary road heads northeast toward Carice. Lamielle features gentle climbs and short descents, with partially paved and some rough sections.

The final stretch leads to Tilory, after which Route 302 continues seamlessly as Route 45 in the Dominican Republic, connecting travelers to nearby towns across the border.

Throughout its journey, RD‑302 meanders through rolling hills, rural farmland, and small communities, serving as a vital link for agriculture, trade, and daily travel. Drivers experience a blend of scenic landscapes, river crossings, and local life, making the route both functional and distinctly Haitian in character.
