Route Communale 400-A (RC 400-A), also known as Route La Voûte, is a rural communal road in Jacmel, Sud-Est, Haiti. Running from Route de l’Amitié (RN-4) in the south to the highland community of La Voûte in the north, the 12.8 km (8.0 mi) route winds through the mountainous interior, connecting several small settlements and providing access to churches, markets, and surrounding agricultural areas.
Montagne La Voûte rural section
Route Communale 400-A begins at its southern terminus at Route de l’Amitié (RN-4) in the Bassin Caiman area of Jacmel, just northwest of the urban area. The roadway here is a narrow paved surface in fair condition, bordered by houses, small shops, and roadside vegetation. Within the first two kilometers, it passes Boucan Ibo, serving as a primary access road for residents.
From Boucan Ibo, the route continues northwestward, skirting scattered farmland and pockets of tropical vegetation before entering the broader area of Bas La Voûte. Here, the landscape begins to open slightly, with a mix of small agricultural plots, clustered dwellings, and views of the surrounding hills. The road surface remains paved but narrows to a single lane in places, with occasional uneven patches near drainage dips.
Beyond Bas La Voûte, the road begins a steady climb into the interior hills, winding past rural homesteads and terraced fields. At approximately 5.9 kilometers, it reaches Carrefour La Voûte, a sharp right-hand bend where a secondary track branches off toward hillside homes. In this section, the surface transitions from continuous asphalt to mixed paved and gravel patches, especially in areas where rainwater runoff erodes the edges. Here, sharp curves and steeper gradients are common, and the road’s shoulders often blend directly into the hillside or drop-offs.
As RC 400-A approaches the highland settlement of La Voûte, the pavement becomes more consistent again, supporting the local market area and small transport hubs. The official route terminates at a fork:
- Right fork – narrows immediately into a dirt track leading toward Platon Cap Rouge, a geological plateau notable for Dispensaire La Source and École Communauté de Saurin.
- Left fork – continues as Route La Voûte into the Marbial district. In the La Voûte area, this continuation remains relatively well-defined and passable for standard rural vehicles.
North of La Voûte, as the road climbs toward its northernmost curve, the surface begins to deteriorate. The pavement gives way to packed dirt, and in places the roadway becomes nearly indistinguishable from the surrounding ground in satellite imagery. The alignment hugs the hillside, with increasing elevation and sharper bends. Past this high point, the track descends gradually toward the hamlet of Cochon Gras in the Marbial district, where the discernible roadway ends amid agricultural fields and footpaths. From here, local trails connect to smaller settlements deeper in the mountains.
