About[]
Savanne Désolée, also called Plaine de la Croix (Plain of the Cross), is contiguous with the Désolée settlement. The Estere bridge connects Saint-Marc and the Plaine de l'Artibonite to Gonaïves, as well as the northern route, through Savane Désolée.
The path from Saint Michel de l'Atalaye to Gonaïves leads through the Masse a la Roche to the Ravine a Couleuvres in the Plaine de la Croix, also known as the "Desolate Savannah". The Cocherel settlement is located along the Route de la Savane Desolee.
History[]
• Vernet, whom Toussaint-Louverture had stationed in Gonaives, set fire to this vineyard in 1802 as he evacuated in anticipation of Leclerc's arrival. Toussaint subsequently vacated his camp at Perisse to rendezvous with him at the Estere Bridge. Meanwhile, Rochambeau departed from Savanne Désolée and proceeded to Gonaïves, where he joined Leclerc, who had been present since February 25th.
