About[]

The Cayemites are a pair of small islands, the largest of which is about 2 square leagues in area; they are situated northwest of the Baradères peninsula, opposite Corail and Pestel, which they protect against northerly winds.

There are forests of guaiac wood that are used much in Jérémie to make pilings against the ravages of the sea, and timber of all kinds. Livestock are also raised there, which become fatter with ease. There are sources.

The Grand Cayemite was leased by the State on January 11, 1875, for 5 years to Mr. Adolphe Elie, for $650 per year, payable in advance.

Since the death of Mr. Elie, there has been no other farmer.

Canal de la Cayemite[]

The Canal de la Cayemite Cayemite Channel is the strait that exists between this island and the tip of the peninsula of Baradères (Bec du Marsouin); it is 1.8 kilometers (1 mile) wide. ; it is of sufficient depth (10 to 90 meters / 32 to 300 feet) to allow great ships to pass. However, it is frequented only by cabotage.
