This is the birthplace of Thomas Alexandre Dumas, the famous novelist, who was born in 1762. He was the son of the Marquis de la Pailleterie, a settler, and an African woman. Alexandre Dumas is also the grandfather of the renowned playwright from the French Academy. Horatius Cocles
In 1803, the rebels of Jérémie took control of the Ivonet Habitation where a camp was set up. The city's commander, Colonel Berger, led an attack on June 23 to expel them; however, he tragically lost his life to a saber strike.
