History[]
Chatard
• In 1820, in the commune of Plaisance, the state had 27 tiles of land occupied by farmers. The Chatard habitation, located in what was then the rural section of Laville, was reserved for public utility.
It was there that the government army stopped Salnave's army from marching on Gonaïves in 1863. General Eugène Morisset, commander of the Gonaïves District, waved the white flag, asking to surrender to the government. General Morisset advanced alone and without a guide to receive their submission, a bullet hit him in the face, and he fell into his blood. The detachment fled.
General Milieu Jean-Jacques immediately replaced General Morisset at the head of the army. In the session of May 8, the Chamber and the Senate they voted a pension of 4,100 to the widow of General Morisset, as a national reward, and President Salnave's government abolished this pension as soon as it came in.
Chatard was a formidable position which could have been admirably drawn. It is placed on a hill that dominates the road, the river and the village of Plaisance. The rebels had established a palisade entrenchment, according to the rules of art, behind a cleverly concealed embrasure. They had placed a piece of cannon bearing the vintage of 1703, being able to sweep the road and the village. On the highest plateau of the hill was established their headquarters which, by its situation, offered a second line, both for the attack and for the defense. This excellent position was abandoned by the rebels.
