Grande-Rivière-du-Nord☆ (41,362) Known as a hub between the Cape and the Central Plateau, this old city bears the name of the immense river, encircled by majestic mountains, which crosses it. The economy is largely supported by agriculture (oranges, cocoa, plantains, sugar cane, and coffee). It just celebrated its tricentennial. The city is one of the few places in Haiti to possess a large population of people living to 100 years of age. The birthplace of Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Jean-Baptiste Chavannes, the "Black is Beautiful" slogan of the 1960s was also inspired here. |
Bahon (23,251) Closely aligned with its larger neighbor, this small town is synonymous with the Grande Rivière du Nord valley. The local economy is based on agriculture (avacado, cashews, coffee, and mango) and livestock. Bahon is one of the country's leading cashew producers. A dish made from cashew nuts and chicken in the region called 'poul ak nwa' is a delicacy here. |
