Haiti Local

Fond Rouge Torbeck is a communal section in Grand'Anse, Haiti. It is the ninth communal section of Jérémie.

History[]

Originally the twelfth rural section of the town of Jérémie, Fond-Rouge was subdivided in 1875, giving birth to the rural section of Bas de Fond Rouge. The soil of the place is red, from where it gets its name. Even local coffee is reddish. In Jérémie, the inhabitants of Fond Rouge can be recognized by the red tint of their clothes, even when they are properly dressed.

In 1803, General Fontanges Chevalier, Commander of the Les Cayes District and Chief General of the Government Army, built a fort on called Fort Salomon against the rebels of Jérémie. It was constructed at Morne Malegnon, located between the Bordes and Fond-Rouge habitations. This fort was attacked by the Jeremiens on August 19, 1883 and removed.
