History[]
Espère is also a habitation and intersection located near Ville de Pestel.
• In 1843, during the revolution against President Boyer, the citizens of Pestel had built a fort in which one could defend against superior forces. Dorvilliers Bruneau retreated to the revolution. Colonel Lamarre, commander for the Governement, tried to force his way into Pestel. Dorvilliers shouted at him to stop. Lamarre advanced alone to the rampart, sat down on it, and put Dorvilliers in question. This one told him the motives of the taking of arms against the president. Then arrived the young Richard Germain, captain in the battalion of Domilliers. Lamarre disdained to speak to such a young man and insulted him. Seeing the impossibility of guiding the leaders of the revolution, Lamarre addressed the soldiers and came to shout out to some: "Vive the president of Haiti!" Dorvilliers contained them. Then Lamarre seized Dorvilliers and asked his soldiers for ropes to bind him. Dorvilliers drew his pistol from his pocket, and, leaning it to Lamarre's loins, releases the blow which knocks him out of the ramparts. The government army fires on the battalion of Dorvilliers which was decorated with bullet holes. The sappers of Lamarre shot him several times in the head. The revolutionaries did not have their weapons loaded. They were made 13 prisoners who were taken to Lessieur, as well as the body of Colonel Lamarre. On both sides, about twenty men were lost. Colonel Maignan took the command in place of Lamarre. The revolutionaries, enlarged by the arrival of a reinforcement from Jérémie, were mixed up with the army of the government and the shouts of: "Long live the popular army!" resounded in the camp which General Rivière Hérard seized. The most frank cordiality reigned in the camp.
