About[]

Originally the first rural section of the municipality of Cerca-la-Source, Ecrevisses is located across the international border from Bánica, Dominican Republic. The settlement was built around a chapel and a rural school. Not far is Fort Biassou, at the foot of which flows the Artibonite River.

History[]

• In 1793, Jean Francois and Biassou withdrew to the Moka Neuf side (Sainte-Suzanne) and Ecrevisse, on the eastern heights of Grande-Rivière-du-Nord, after having been repulsed from Dondon by Laveaux.

Fort Biassou, located in the municipality of Vallière, was built in 1795 by the English across the Dominican border from Bánica. It is now in ruins. At the foot of the fort runs the Artibonite. It is also called Fort Banica. It bears the name of the famous leader of the Biassou bands, who, as early as 1791, put the slaves on their feet and commanded the Spaniards against the French. He was the head of Toussaint-Louverture who passed to the service of France and became governor of the French colony.

• On November 30, 1888, the government troops seized this fort from the Northerners. An order of the day of the adviser to the war, the General Anselme Prophete, dates from Las Cahobas, announced this fact of arms which caused Vallière to fall to the power of the President Légitime. Four times the northerners returned to the charge and were legitimate. Four times the northerners returned to the charge and were repulsed with loss. At the fall of Legitime, General Hippolyte's government ordered the demolition of Fort Biassou, which constituted a danger to the republic. Lost in the woods, this fort, which in any case was not called a rendering service, says the statement of the situation of 1890, had become a real haven where the bandits from everywhere would meet.
