Dérac
DeRac is a small, underserved, very dry community on Fort Liberty Bay, approximately 6 km (10 miles) east of Terrier-Rouge with a population of about 6,000. With its close proximity to the Bay, most of the people in DeRac who have employment make their living by fishing or selling fish. But, in general, employment opportunities are very scarce in this area. The Baptist Church in DeRac, "L'eglise Baptiste Philadelphie de DeRac" was founded in 1941. One of the ministries of the church is their school of approximately 300 students in preschool through 6th grade. The children in the school are provided with a meal at school each school day.
History[]
• In 1803, General Daut Brave left the Sicard plantation against the French and camped on the Jaquinville, numbering 3,000. The same year Fort-Liberté was blocked by sea by the English and by land by the natives. General Dumont, who commanded the place, offered the native general an interview at Sicard. He proposed to him to establish a market at the gates of the city. The natives instead of answering him; stopped him and led him to the Blancourt plantation in Trou. The French had to put themselves at the discretion of the English who took him to the Cape at Rochambeau on September 8, 1803.
