Comendador (English: "Commander") is a city in the Dominican Republic. It is the seat of government of the Elías Piña province. Comendador is the westernmost municipality of the Dominican Republic.
Etymology[]
Its name honors Nicolás de Ovando (Comendador de Lares).
History[]
According to historians, Comendador was founded at the beginning of the 19th century, but acquired importance from 1868. Originally this region was known as El Hato de El Duan.
During the War of Independence, there were several battles between Haitian and Dominican soldiers near the town. The most important was the Battle of La Estrelleta.
On November 29, 1930 the name of Comendador for the municipality was replaced by that of Villa Elías Piña. Law No. 342 of May 29, 1972 restored to the city the name with which it was founded, Comendador.

Demographics[]
According to the 2002 Population and Housing Census, the municipality has a total population of 25,475, of which 12,574 were men and 12,901 were women. The urban population of the municipality was 44.71%.
Economy[]
The main economic activity of the municipality is agriculture, although tertiary services have been increasing, especially trade with Haiti. The economic productions include the cultivation of avocado, cassava, beans and peanuts.

Its most visited tourist attractions are the spa of Las Dos Bocas, and confluence of the Macasia and Comendador rivers.
Heritage[]
The festivities of Comendador are held on October 15 in honor of the Virgin Santa Tereza.
