Amandier
West Indian Almond
Terminalia catalpa
Almond trees are grown primarily as a shade and ornamental tree on the sea coast. At Bainet, there are some especially large specimens with holes 60 cm (24 inches) in diameter at breast height. The Haitians distinguish two varieties, one with a yellow and the other with a red fruit. Sometimes the salty flesh of the fruit is eaten; and the pits are cracked to extract the seed, which is very tasty when toasted or when incorporated in tablettes - a confection of nuts and whole cane syrup similar to American peanut brittle. The wood is prized for making tool handles.
