Most of Haiti’s airports align along an east–west corridor that mirrors the country’s main population belt, rather than a north–south spine like many island nations. This pattern stems from development concentrated in coastal plains and interior valleys, not around a single capital-to-resort axis. While many islands organize air travel around one dominant metro hub, Haiti’s airports function as a connected chain rather than a hub-and-spoke system.

Several Haitian airports were established before reliable road access existed—and in some areas, aircraft remain the most direct year-round connection. In places like the Northwest, Upper Central Plateau, and parts of the South, airstrips historically replaced roads rather than complemented them.

These airports are more than transportation points—they are lifelines. They move people, medicine, aid, and opportunity, often serving communities where roads are unreliable or nonexistent.

Haiti has one of the shortest average distances between airfields in the Caribbean, despite having some of the most difficult overland travel conditions. Airports are often less than an hour’s flight apart—but several hours apart by road. Haiti’s unusually dense network of small airports means that reviving even one regional airstrip can reconnect multiple towns at once—making aviation one of the highest-leverage infrastructure investments.
