Magnan-des-Bassins[]
One of the notable features of this area is a beautiful natural spring that has historically played a role in the local ecosystem. This spring was originally intended to channel water to the city, providing a vital resource for both drinking and irrigation purposes. The water from the spring feeds into the Bassins River, which has been an essential waterway for the surrounding agricultural activities. However, the process of channeling this water raises significant concerns regarding its potential impact on the local agriculture. The proposed development could lead to considerable agricultural losses for the area.
Point Lapierre[]
The bay of Gonaives extends from Pointe Lapierre to the point of Gonaives. It is at the Lapierre point that the inhabitants of Gonaives send by canoe to fetch the drinking water which the surroundings of their city are lacking. The Lapierre source is clear and limpid. Under Geffrard, a fountain was established in Gonaives, and it is the water from this spring which supplied it.
On the afternoon of November 24, 1888, during the insurrection of the North against the authority of the Chief of the Executive Power Legitime, some sailors of the warship Dessalines, went down to Lapierre to make water there; they were surprised and massacred by armed men who were watching them in the woods. The Dessalines garrison went down and burned all the huts. The Dessalines had 1 death, 1 wounded and 3 prisoners.
Morne Blanc[]
A hill dependent on the Cibao chain, it is also called Pointe Castrés.
- In February 1798, Dessalines was arrested there by Toussaint Louverture for not having rescued Christophe Morney at Lapointe when he could. There is a fort there.
- On October 22, 1888, General Jean Jumeau landed there from Port au-Prince, sent by the provisional government to go and fight the Gonaives insurgents after the death of Séide Télémaque.
