Aux Cadets is a communal section in the Western Department of Haiti. It is the second communal section of Pétion-Ville. Located on the hillsides surrounding the capital, it is primarily a residential area with scattered settlements and small-scale agricultural activity. The section’s rolling terrain offers partial views over Pétion-Ville and the surrounding lower lands, while life in the area is shaped by narrow roads, dispersed homes, and reliance on local community resources.
History[]
Aux Cadets was formerly the 6th section of Pétion-Ville before the current administrative designation. Historically, the area developed as part of the highland outskirts of the capital, with small-scale agriculture and residential settlements shaping its hillside character.
A notable historical event occurred on July 23, 1892, when Mrs. Vve. Byron brought a petition before the Haitian Senate concerning the town’s primary water source located on her land at the Pélerin estate. She requested a sum of 15,000 gourdes from the State for the appropriation of the water source, despite having already received 3,000 gourdes in 1893 as compensation for her rights and claims. This case highlights the longstanding importance of water resources in the area and the negotiations between private landowners and the State during the late 19th century.
Over the 19th and 20th centuries, as Pétion-Ville expanded, 2e Aux Cadets gradually transitioned into a more residential area while retaining pockets of agricultural activity, with settlement patterns adapted to the section’s rolling, semi-mountainous terrain.
