Anse-Rouge (Kreyol: Ans Wouj), (English: Red Cove) is commune in the Gros-Morne Arrondissement, Artibonite Department of Haiti. The population was 43,395 at the 2015 census. Anse Rouge is home to the the first salt production site in the country and is also abundant in marble limestone.

About[]

Anse-Rouge is a coastal town in northwestern Haiti, located midway between Môle Saint-Nicolas and Gonaïves. It is positioned on the Gulf of Gonâve, 8km (5 miles) south of the Nord-Ouest Departmental line at Lagon Petit-Paradis. Anse-Rouge is considered a part of Haiti's Far West subregion. Established in 1947 and designated as a commune in the same year, Anse-Rouge was once renowned as a "paradise" due to its favorable location, offering breathtaking views of the sky and sea. However, the climate has undergone changes over time, resulting in a significant decrease in rainfall. Consequently, the area has transformed into a dry and arid landscape, resembling a desert, which has adversely affected agricultural productivity.

History[]

Anse Rouge was founded by the government led by General Florvil Hyppolite in 1889. It was a district of Gonaïves until 1948 when President Dumarsais Estime transformed it into a municipality. The law was passed by Parliament on August 31, 1948 and signed by the executive on October 6, 1949.

This commune includes a district and two communal sections, namely, 1ère Section de L'Arbre and 2ème Section Sources-Chaudes (English: 1st: "The Tree" and 2nd: Hot Springs). Its terrain dominated by hills and plains, experiencing a climate ranging from normal to warm.

According to the IHSI, the town has a total area of 434 square kilometers (168 square miles). Anse-Rouge is bordered on the northwest by the communes of Baie-de-Henne and Jean-Rabel, on the north by Port-de-Paix, and Bassin-Bleu, all of which are in the Northwest Department, on the east Terre-Neuve, on the south by Gonaïves, west by Gulf of Gonâve. The town is 151 km (94 miles) west of Cap-Haïtien and 200 km (124 miles north of Port-au-Prince.

Anse-Rouge is considered a Far West community, located near the mouth of Gonaïves Bay. The town features a varied shoreline with salt marshes in the central coast and sandy areas towards the north and south.

The town is traversed by Route Departmentale 102, which is also referred to as Route Gonaïves-Anse Rouge. Another important road in Anse-Rouge is Route Communale 100-K, which connects to Route 102, in the center of town. Route 100-K provides access to Terre-Neuve and Gonaïves.

Economy[]

Regarding economic and financial Institutions, for example, there is no bank in the municipality. The Anse-rougeois go to other communes to carry out banking operations. Additionally, there are at least four restaurants, two reception centers, two credit unions, and two marketing cooperatives available in the area.

Transportation Anse-Rouge is 32 miles (54km) northwest of the city of Gonaïves, on coastal route (Departmental Route 102) known as Route Gonaives-Anse-Rouge.

Donkeys are a popular means of transportation in the town, with children often riding them to attend school or search for water. Anse-Rouge has an airstrip primarily utilized for relief operations

Education The municipality has a regional inspection office that represents the Ministry of National Education of Youth and Sports. There are a total of 139 primary schools, consisting of seven public schools, 130 private schools, and two congregational schools. Additionally, there are five secondary schools, with one being public and four being private.[1]

Health The municipality of Anse-Rouge lacks representation from the Ministry of Public Health and Population when it comes to health-related matters. In terms of healthcare facilities, there is a health center equipped with a bed, along with five dispensaries. Furthermore, the community has access to a doctor, a dentist, four nurses, and five auxiliary healthcare providers who cater to the healthcare needs of the local population.

Utilities The town's water sources include a pond, 33 individual wells, two artesian wells, and one pump. These water sources are primarily used for domestic purposes. It is important to note that the town of Anse-Rouge does not have access to electricity.

Security Anse-Rouge has three peace courts and a police station within its Administrative and Judicial Infrastructures. The commune lacks a prison facility.

Culture[]

Religion There are more than 61 temples in the commune of Anse-Rouge, which include Catholic, Baptist, and Adventist temples. Out of these, the Baptist churches are the most numerous with 47 churches.

Communication The town of Anse-Rouge does not have a radio station, newspaper / magazine or television station.

Leisure Anse-Rouge lacks cultural heritage sites, but it does have 16 gagueres and ten football fields, albeit in need of some tender care. Additionally, there is a cinema and a theater room for leisure activites.

Going to the beach is described as "a stark contrast to the desert terrain; a dusty, mountainous and cactus-filled landscape with the occasional lonely hut".

Organizations In relation to Political Parties and Organizations, there are four political parties, seven popular organizations, a peasant group, a women's group, two NGOs, and two international organizations with multiple annexes

The town has become significantly more populated due to the influx of refugees who were severely impacted by the earthquake in 2010. The student population in Anse-Rouge has tripled from 100 students per school, prompting Living Water Ministries to develop plans for a new school in order to provide more educational opportunities for children. The school is projected to allow for an increased capacity of those seeking to pursue their education. If the plans are implemented, it will signify a positive advancement for the town.
